Whitby In-Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical EquipmentWelcome to Whitby PAT Testing or as its is widley know “PAT” or Portable Appliance Testing. There is no current legal legislation that enforces the use of ectrical equipment testing, however it is established that a regime of testing is seen as an adopted method of ensuring all your eleactrical equipment is tested as being safe to use. Technically, you don't have to PAT test any electrical equipment in the workplace, however you have a duty of care to ensure appliances are maintained, safe and not pose any danger, ectrical equipment testing is a way of ensuring you can meet a range of electrical safety obligations protecting the users of your equipment as well as your property... The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 states all employers must provide a safe working environment. This legislation has implications for various health and safety issues, including electrical safety. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 is more specific. These regulations demand all electrical systems are suitably maintained. This obligation is bolstered by the Provisions and Use of Work Regulations 1998 (referred to as PUWER). PUWER states every employer must ensure work equipment is maintained in:
All of these obligations exist to make workplaces safer. And with around a quarter of all workplace fires in the UK started by faulty electrical equipment, you have a moral and legal duty to keep appliances safe. PAT testing is one of the most effective ways to do this, for those familiar with PAT's it should be noted that they have have now been replaced with ITEE or EETs, acronyms for Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment or Electrical Equipment Testing. Why has PAT changed to EET?The reason for the name change from PAT Testing to ITEE / EET is clear and straightforward. 'Portable Appliance Testing', often led to confusion about what needed to be tested. Many people mistakenly thought that only portable appliances like toasters and laptops required inspection. The truth is that basically anything that requires the use of a domestic three pin plug into the property main power supply requires testing.
