At about the same time as the Rohilla rounded the Bass Rock, her port of destination, Dunkirk, was being raided by German bomber planes. The docks were crowded with ships delivering troops and military supplies, but the target was the old part of town. The only casualties were a women an a small boy selling newspapers, but this was the first time a new development in warfare was used – the deliberate attacking of the civilian population.
