Walter Horsfield

Possibly the only one of Barnoldswick men on the ship who realised it would be a long war was Walter Horsfield. He had been in the Boer War. A lot of optimistic theories had gone wrong in that war too.

Walter had two medals for his service in South Africa, where he had been attached to the General Hospital at Bloemfontein from April to October 1900, and to the Dielfontein General Hospital from January to August the following year.

Still single, he lived with his parents at 7, Essex Street and was a weaver.
