There was a tremendous impact . . . the whole ship shuddered.
On the bridge, the Captain, Second Officer Winstanley and the helmsmen were all thrown to the deck. The Captain shouted “A mine my god!”
On the Boat Deck, Chief Officer Bond was returning to his cabin when he was knocked off his feet and crashed against the rail.
Second Officer Gwynn was about to go down to the Engine Room and would have been flung down the steep steps if he had not been firmly gripping the handrail.
Fourth Officer Graham had almost reached the bridge stairs when he suddenly found himself flat on his back.
All over the ship there was chaos.
Captain Neilson remained convinced the ship struck a mine. There is the possibility that what she really struck was the tip of Whitby Rock.
